The word “meme” comes from the Greek mimema, meaning something that has been “imitated.” They are highly versatile in form and purpose, serving as tools for light entertainment, self-expression, social commentary, training, and discourse. Two fundamental characteristics of internet memes are creative reproduction and intertextuality.
